Pinterest MAU annual breakdown

According to the latest statistics, the number of active users on Pinterest in Q2 2022 is 433 million―holding steady from the previous quarter. This is also a 4.6% decrease year-over-year from Q2 2021’s 454 million.

Despite the annual fall, the number of users on Pinterest has actually been rising over the past few years. Exactly six years ago in Q2 2016, there were 135 million active users on Pinterest, less than one-third of the current figure. This number grew by 37% in Q2 2017, when the number of Pinterest MAUs reached 185 million. A year later, it increased to 231 million, before hitting 300 million in 2019.

2020 saw a huge surge in the number of Pinterest users, which analysts attribute to the COVID-19 pandemic. That year, the number of active users on Pinterest soared by 38.7%, reaching 416 million. This boom continued the following year as Pinterest added another 38 million users (around 9.1%) to total 454 million.

The decline in 2022 marks the first time the number of Pinterest users has decreased since at least 2016. According to experts, this is a sign that social media usage is returning to pre-pandemic norms and levels.

Between 2016 and 2022, the best performing quarter in terms of the number of Pinterest users came in Q1 2021. That quarter, there were 478 million people actively using Pinterest. This number fell nearly every quarter in 2021. It closed out the year with 431 million users and rose slightly to 433 million in Q1 2022.

In terms of quarterly growth, between Q1 2016 and Q1 2021, the only time the number of Pinterest users declined was in Q2 2018, when it fell by a slight 3.3% to 231 million, from the previous quarter’s 239 million.
